Highpoint launches USB 3 Backup and RAID enclosures

updated 09:00 pm EDT, Mon March 12, 2012

Can use dual USB 3 port for up to 10Gb per second

HighPoint Technologies has launched two new Mac and PC compatible external storage solutions using USB 3.0 for a theoretical speed of up to 5Gb per second per port, or 10Gb per second total possible throughput in the dual-bay, "toaster" design RocketStor Smart Backup and RocketStore Smart RAID. The units can accommodate two SATA standard-size HDD and SSDs up to 6Gb per second in speed and can work with add-on USB 3 PCI-E cards.

The units, which are also backward-compatible with USB 2, are hot-swappable and hot-pluggable and come with a configurable "Snap" button that can be set up to run automatic backups. The Smart Backup is aimed at small business and media professionals who need flexible, easy-to-use backup solutions. The unit offers an adaptive backup mode that intelligently backups up only new or updated files, and a timestamp feature that allows users to restore files from previous versions.

When connected to a USB 3 PCI-E card such as HighPoint's own line of Mac-compatible RocketU cards, transfer speeds up to a theoretical 10Gb per second can been sustained. Both it and the Rocketstor Smart RAID come with an included USB 3 cable.

The RocketStor Smart RAID is designed specifically for Mac Pros and OS X 10.7 Lion. The unit is the same external enclosure as the Smart Backup, but comes bundled with a 2-port USB 3 PCI-E 2.0 x4 controller card. In addition to all the features of the RocketStor Smart Backup unit, it comes with a browser-based management interface that lets it be set up for RAID 0, 1 and JBOD arrays and up to a possible 10Gb per second throughput utilizing the included controller card.

The unit also supports single drives and non-RAID configurations, and can work with SATA devices between 3-6Gb per second. Both the Smart Backup and Smart RAID will be available over the course of March from a variety of resellers as well as directly from HighPoint. Prices have not yet been announced.
