AT&T spreads LTE to Cleveland, New Orleans, more by summer

ATT 4G LTE gets next wave expansion

AT&T on Monday outlined the next wave of its LTE network's expansion on Monday. Another 12 cities would get its truer 4G network between April and the early summer. Most of the coverage would include cities in states that until now haven't had AT&T's LTE available.

These should include Akron, Canton, and Cleveland in Ohio; Baton Rouge and New Orleans in Louisiana; Staten Island, New York; St. Louis, Missouri; Bloomington, Lafayette, and Muncie in Indiana; Naples, Florida; and Bryan-College Station, Texas.

For AT&T, the expanded coverage should help cover a much wider swath of the population, but also takes on added importance with the addition of an LTE-equipped iPad this week. Although the carrier has been adding tablets like the HTC Jetstream and Pantech Element, none are believed to have sold in large numbers. Apple's tablet, as well as future smartphones like the HTC One X, will present some of the few instances of similar devices being available on more than one 4G-class network in the US at the same time.

    why no coverage in PNW?

I checked AT&T's map and the entire northwest quarter of the US is blank. I know most of this is lightly inhabited but there are no LTE cities north of San Francisco. Neither Portland or Seattle, two larger metropolitan areas, are included. Verizon abandoned the State of Washington a couple years ago, turning everything over to Frontier, so it's not like AT&T would be invading Verizon's territory. Making it doubly interesting, AT&T is selling the Microsoft-based Nokia Lumia 900 with 4G LTE and they don't even show service in Redmond, WA.
