updated 04:55 pm EDT, Mon March 12, 2012

Almost 200 titles will be available by year's end

In January 2011, Amazon launched its digital Kindle Singles library. The collection features works that are longer in length than articles, but shorter than books. MocoNews reports that, in the 15 months since the store opened its doors, more than two million of the works have been purchased and downloaded.

Amazon has released 165 Kindle Singles to date. The e-tailer adds three new titles weekly. The publications are typically are 5,000 to 30,000 words in length. Prices range from $1 to $3. The authors set the price and receive 70 percent of the sale. This formula is different from competing sites such as Apple's Quick Reads and Barnes & Noble's Nook Snaps, where the publishers keep most of the revenues.

The works include pieces from both known and unknown writers. Some of the more recognized authors include Lee Child, Stephen King, David Baldacci, Dean Koontz, Karin Slaughter, Jodi Picoult, and Jon Krakauer.

Kindle Singles can be read on Kindle devices and apps. About 30 of the titles can also be borrowed by Amazon Prime subscribers through the company's Kindle Owners' Lending Library.
