Comcast dismisses idea of teaming with Netflix

updated 02:25 pm EST, Fri March 9, 2012

Comcast won't bring Netflix to its portfolio

Despite recent reports that Netflix is in talks with cable providers on some form of partnership, Comcast has gone on record to say it has no interest in such a deal. It won't add the service to its Xfinity subscribers as an on-demand offering or part of its billing service on any device, claims a New York Times report. Netflix believes it could be offered by major cable providers as a premium offering.

Comcast has a similar service in progress, dubbed Streampix. It offers less content, at 75,000 streaming TV shows and movies, but is also less costly, starting at $5 per month rather than the $8 Netflix charges. Its system requires a TV subscription, however, where Netflix is independent.

Other cable companies also aren't likely to bring Netflix into the fold, as they are working on their own alternatives. Dish Network and Blockbuster are working on a web streaming service, while Verizon has teamed up with Redbox on its own option.
