Focusing on getting new UI out the door

Last week, rumors began to circulate that Valve was working on the Steam Box, a hardware gaming console. Today, the online gaming software maker has clarified that it is not planning to produce such a device any time soon. The company also stated that it's not partnering with anyone on such a project to date.

The rumors began surfacing later last week. They implied that Valve was developing a console that ran on an Intel Core i7 processor, and had 8GB of RAM as well as NVIDIA graphics. Unlike most consoles, it would be able to run games from multiple game makers' online stores.

Doug Lombardi, Valve's marketing director, indicated that the company is focusing on getting its Steam Big Picture Mode UI out the door. This is a new interface for its online gaming service that makes it easier to play the company's games on a PC connected to their TV rather than a regular desktop display. Lombardi added "we're building boxes to test that on," implying that it was misinterpreted as a signal that Valve was working on a gaming console. At the same time, however, he would not confirm that the company would not ever bring such a product to market. [via Kokatu]
