HP says Envy 15's off-color display is working properly

updated 04:00 pm EST, Thu March 8, 2012

Color representation may be different but not off

In January, many owners of the latest generation HP Envy 15 notebook began to complain that the optional Radiance Display upgrade for the ultrabook was not reproducing colors properly. HP has now responded to its customers' complaints, and reassured them in a statement that the panel is "functioning properly." At the same time, HP has advised them that it will be offering a software utility download in the coming weeks which will let them adjust the default color settings.

The Radiance Display is a $150 LED-backlit option on the Envy 15. For that, owners get a 1080p screen that HP claims displays a wider spectrum of colors than available on the standard offering. The customer complaints focused on how orange and violet colors were represented. The reds looked orange, while the violets looked the same as blue.

In its statement, the company did acknowledge that some of the colors "may appear differently" than with other screens. In addition to offering the color-adjusting utility, HP suggested that customers not happy with the color reproduction should consider an alternative notebook or external display that incorporates the company's DreamColor technology.
