Struggling ultrabook vendors face new Taiwanese OEM threat

updated 06:40 am EST, Wed March 7, 2012

Taiwanese OEMs eye sub-ultrabook segment

Following news that Acer is selling its Aspire S3 ultrabook at a strictly break-even price of $799, a new report suggests that second-tier Taiwanese manufacturers are planning on releasing ultrabook-like notebooks as cheap as $600. The Taiwanese vendors plan on releasing ultra-slim notebooks that look like ultrabooks, but are made of plastic. For notebooks to be able to carry the official Intel Ultrabook tag, they must be made of aluminum and other premium components including SSDs.

According to Acer's Christoph Pohlmann, the possibility that the company could get its pricing down to as low as $650 or lower was hard to foresee happening in the short to medium term-- Acer's global president Jianren Weng had predicted this would happen by 2013. The segment leading Apple MacBook Air line-up has continued to dominate the ultraportable notebook segment with ultrabook vendors finding it difficult to drum up user interest in their Windows-based alternatives.

To date, PC buyers have continued to purchase notebooks that are more fully-featured and offer better value that ultrabooks, which generally sacrifice features for thinness and design with form overriding function. News that Taiwanese OEMs are considering entering the segment, but offering notebooks that look just like ultrabooks, but at a significant discount could further dampen top-tier vendor interest in the fledgling segment which until recently had been hoped to rekindle flat PC notebook sales globally.
