Sony aiming for expansion of PlayStation Suite

Sony is aiming to expand its PlayStation Suite with the release of a free open beta SDK to developers next month, with a final version due later this year for $99. The SDK had previously been in a closed beta for select vendors, although anyone could apply for access. The SDK is designed to help spur the development of new PlayStation Suite specific apps that will be able to find their way on to any PlayStation Certified Android device.

Currently, the only apps that comprise the PlayStation Suite for PlayStation Certified Android devices are PSOne titles. Sony is hoping that the SDK will provide developers large and small with a platform that can help them reach a wider audience, while also enhancing its gaming ecosystem. To this extent, it says that it is aiming to increase the profile of the PlayStation Suite in the PlayStation Store by devoting a new section to it.

Although any Android manufacturer may apply to Sony for PlayStation Certification, currently Sony is the only manufacturer to have such devices on the market. Compatible devices include the Xperia arc, Xperia acro, Xperia PLAY, Xperia acro HD, Xperia S, Xperia ion, Sony Tablet S and P. Games and devices that are either accepted into the PlayStation Suite or are PlayStation Certified must meet strict Sony criteria for inclusion in the programs.
