Google Search app for Windows Phone gets total remake

updated 06:00 pm EST, Wed March 7, 2012

First major mobile search update in 16 months

Google has introduced a revamped search app for Windows Phones. Google Search App lets Smartphone owners running WP7.5 conduct searches with greater speed and an improved user interface (free, Windows Marketplace). The key changes include auto completion, voice-based searching, and location-driven results.

Google Autocomplete uses special algorithms to predictively finish entering search terms as a user is typing in the search criteria. Voice Search uses speech recognition to enter a query rather than the user having to type it in. It's activated by tapping a microphone icon on the screen, much like the iOS version. The My Location draws on the phone's GPS to provide localized results based on its position. Google emphasizes that it won't plot a phone's location unless the user gives permission.

The new Google Search App reflects Google's first major update of its search app for Windows Phone since November, 2010.
