Microsoft kit lets Windows 8 app writers use Bing Maps

SDK makes it embed metro mapping code for apps

Microsoft has released a new beta version of its Bing Maps SDK for Metro Style apps. With it, developers will be able to begin writing code to integrate Bing generated mapping of local urban areas into applications running Windows 8 Consumer Preview, which was made available last week. The new SDK lets developers write in JavaScript, C#, C++, or Visual Basic.

As expected with a beta release, not all functionality of the ultimate SDK will be available. It will support road views, aerial and bird's-eye imagery, as well as a traffic overlay. Some features initially will be available only to US-based developers. To encourage usage of the SDK, Microsoft is allowing free and unlimited use of Bing Maps controls and APIs within developers' Metro style apps during the time Windows 8 is available as a pre-release.
