comScore: Apple near overtaking Motorola in US cell ranks

updated 02:10 pm EST, Tue March 6, 2012

comScore January 2012 data shows Apple closing gap

Apple is near ousting Motorola as the third-largest phone builder operating in the US, comScore found in just-published data on Tuesday. Between the October launch of the iPhone 4S and January, Apple gained two percent of the total cellphone market, putting it at 12.8 percent. A small if continued declined from Motorola has put it at 13.2 percent, raising the chance that Apple will overtake even Motorola's combined share by the spring.

Every other phone maker in the top five was either flat or lost share as their smartphone performance wasn't enough to offset the decline of basic feature phones.

Smartphone share itself echoed trends and saw Apple and Google alike cooling off. Android was still growing, having gained more than two points to hit 48.6 percent, but was not much changed from its December results. Apple had gained 1.4 percent in the same space, but was virtually steady with its December share as a result.

Microsoft, Nokia, and RIM all continued their slides. The BlackBerry at third was down to 15.2 percent, while Microsoft lost exactly one point to hit 4.4 percent. Symbian was down to 1.5 percent.

Chart: U.S. Smartphone Platform Share Jan-2012Description: The number of U.S. smartphone subscribers surpassed the 100-million mark in January, up 13 percent since October to 101.3 million subscribers. Google Android ranked as the top smartphone platform with 48.6 percent market share (up 2.3 percentage points) followed by Apple with 29.5 percent market share (up 1.4 percentage points). RIM ranked third with 15.2 percent share, followed by Microsoft (4.4 percent) and Symbian (1.5 percent).Source : comScore MobiLens, Subscribers Age: 13+, 3 Mo. Avg.
