Nokia PureView will come to Windows Phone, not yet in the US

Nokia PureView tech to spread to new OS soon

Nokia's Smart Devices Executive VP Jo Harlow in commentary this weekend gave hints that the 808 PureView's extreme camera technology would come to Windows Phone devices soon. Echoing some sentiments from the end of the live event at Mobile World Congress, she told Aamulehti that it would "not take very long." She couldn't divulge when, although it's possible that Apollo (Windows Phone 8) in late 2012 may be an opportunity.

The platform switch may be necessary to see PureView available officially in the US and Canada. A check of the developer page for the 808 has shown that the global phone launch consciously excludes North America. Nokia hasn't said why, although it's likely Symbian's much smaller, declining share in the US has left little chance of the 808 selling well. It's likely to still reach the country through full-price unlocked versions sold through importers.

PureView is a first in cameras by providing a large and very dense sensor that avoids most of the image noise pitfalls that would likely be present in any camera its size. Along with providing a very high level of detail that can be used for large crops, it can lower the resolution to improve its image quality: dropping to 38, eight, or five megapixels combines pixels together to generate a cleaner image.

Windows Phone doesn't currently have a way to account for PureView and would likely need special driver software as well as an upgraded camera app. [via WPCentral and Phone Arena]
