Secondary evidence supports next iPad carrying LTE

updated 05:30 pm EST, Mon March 5, 2012

iPad 3 now seen more likely with LTE

Mounting rumors of the next iPad carrying LTE built steam Monday. A new claim from iMore, which accurately pegged the March 7 event date, maintained that LTE would be part of the launch event on Wednesday. Details were still left out of the loop, such as whether it would involve a unified LTE chipset for everyone or if there would need to be separate versions for AT&T, Verizon, and other carriers.

A quad-core processor was also still enroute, even with talk of an A5X possibly being a dual-core processor instead.

If brought to reality, the combination would set a high barrier for other tablet makers by claiming a device at least as fast but with a larger fan base and a larger app ecosystem. Android tablet designers have so far had quad-core and LTE tablets, but never both in a shipping design or with necessarily faster performance. Pre-Android 4.0 benchmarks showed the iPad 2 outracing a Tegra 3 in 3D despite having half the cores and an older graphics chipset.

Most other details have possibly been settled for the next iPad, such as the 2048x1536 display and a slightly thicker but similar design compared to the current generation.
