Two tips: next iPad is called iPad HD

updated 07:20 pm EST, Mon March 5, 2012

Apple said to have settled on iPad HD

An uncommon instance of two dovetailing rumors may have divulged the final name of the next iPad. Both CNET and VentureBeat understood from sources that it would be called the iPad HD to emphasize the high-resolution 2048x1536 screen. While still going mostly on word, it came just after accessories had turned up making an association with the name.

Some room was left open for doubt, as web domains like iPadHD.com and related other domains hadn't been touched. Apple sometimes waits until after its product name is public before snapping up web addresses, however.

Despite some claims, Apple wouldn't be the first to show off a true 1080p tablet. Both the Acer Iconia Tab A700 and ASUS Transformer Pad Infinity will have 1080p-native displays. Neither expected to ship for weeks or months, however, and could give Apple at least a symbolic win. The next iPad should also have a higher pixel density, carrying a higher resolution in a slightly smaller screen area.

The VB tip also asserted that Apple had been buying 7.1-inch displays with the aim of launching a smaller tablet later in the year. Plans weren't definite, but it was partly to curb the impact of the Kindle Fire. Such a claim would contradict both the late Steve Jobs' belief that seven-inch tablets were too small and multiple, occasionally well-sourced rumors surrounding 7.85-inch iPads being more probable.

    Makes Sense

The new rumored retina-ish display and 1080 video back camera both warrant an HD moniker. It will also tie in very nice with the new rumored 1080 capable Apple TV.

    Apple would be first

"Despite some claims, Apple wouldn't be the first to show off a true 1080p tablet. Both the Acer Iconia Tab A700 and ASUS Transformer Pad Infinity will have 1080p-native displays. Neither expected to ship for weeks or months, however, and could give Apple at least a symbolic win."

Announcing is not the same as having....the symbolic win is for Acer & ASUS in announcing their HD tablets before Apple. They certainly won't be making money off them until long after Apple has made it on the iPad HD.
