Roku remote app reaches Android

updated 08:15 pm EST, Fri March 2, 2012

Turns smartphones into remotes for media players

Roku has released an app for Android devices (free, Android Market). With it, users can control one of the company's streaming media players with a smartphone instead of the remote that normally comes with the hub. Roku made a similar app available for iOS devices in December (free, App Store).

The Android app lets Roku owners use their handset to browse and launch Roku channels, manage all functions of their player, and control playback and instant replay. It also lets them find new games and viewing channels available through the Roku Channel Store.

Roku's streaming players give viewers subscribed access to video content including Netflix, Hulu Plus, and the NBA. Free or subscribed music comes from sources like Pandora, and news flows from sources such as the Wall Street Journal.
