BlackBerry PlayBook outsells iPad at Canadian stores

PlayBook gets rare lead over any tablet in stores

RIM posted word that Best Buy Canada and its sister chain Future Shop had seen the BlackBerry PlayBook become the top-selling tablet at their stores this week. Neither store was reporting by how much, but they implied that the tablet had outsold even the iPad. No mention was made of overall performance in the country.

What had triggered the jump wasn't definite, although the PlayBook 2.0 update's release in late February may have played a part. Renewed marketing linked with the update may have invited some to give it a second look now that the platform was largely finished with native e-mail and calendars.

The achievement would be a rarity for RIM and a much-needed, if minor, coup. Sales have picked up in recent weeks, but only after low sales that persisted even for some time after a 60 percent price cut to $199. Selling to its home country gives it an advantage, but it took some time for RIM to get back to 15 percent of the market in Canada. Apple still dominates the local market at 68 percent and has sales advantages RIM doesn't, such as its own North American stores and resellers that don't carry the PlayBook.

The tablet's chances in the US have been mostly dampened by the Amazon Kindle Fire, which costs as much and even shares some base design. In either country, any edge is likely to be short-lived with an imminent third-generation iPad and the rush that always follows.

    Probably due to stock shortages?

or delayed sales of the iPad 2 in the week prior to the release of the iPad 3?

    1) Nobody is buying iPads the week before new ones come out.

    2) The playbooks are being cleared out at firesale prices... that's not exactly a "success" in my mind.

They "implying" the Playbook is outselling the iPad because they can't legally say that, as it simply isn't true.

I've yet to see ANYONE in Canada carrying a Playbook, though to be fair I don't live in Toronto or near RIM HQ. At our local Staples (which used to proudly display banners for the Playbook), all the signage is now about the iPad.

    Playbook sighting

I finally saw a PlayBook for the first time waiting for an international flight back to Canada! Apparently you have to go half-way around the world to actually find someone with a PlayBook.

    I'm sure it's true

"... had seen the BlackBerry PlayBook become the top-selling tablet at their stores this week"

Probably true - if they count the iPad *outside* the category of "tablets". I've noticed that it's popular among Apple competitors to view their successes within the boundaries of "tablets (non-iPad)".

Not A Mystery In This Economy....

I Just Checked US BestBuy.Com and they are selling New Playbooks at $199, $249, $299 and refurbs at $169. I am an Apple Fan but at that price it is hard for even me too pass one up. Though it might not be an ipad it is far from iCrap especially considering the price point. Just MHO

    RIM is...

winning. Although, I'm not exactly sure what. Look out, iPad. The Playbook is definitely eating into your market share.
