Zynga starts up Zynga Platform, goes beyond Facebook

updated 04:10 pm EST, Thu March 1, 2012

Zynga details own beta platform due this month

Zynga, the social gaming service provider, announced on Thursday it will launch its own Zynga Platform, moving away from its dependence on Facebook and mobile apps. A beta version of Zynga.com will launch first, allowing players to initiate in Zynga social games as well as those from third-party developers. Zynga.com will remain tied into Facebook, as many of the games require assistance from other gamers to complete tasks or obtain virtual objects.

This means they will be able to log in with their Facebook ID and play games with their Facebook contacts. The site will also allow players to have zFriends native to the site, while a Social Stream will let users post to the live social stream to progress through games. It will also show off a user's favorite games, top zFriends, recent activity, and more. A Live Chat will let users send messages, gifts, and more in real time without leaving the game board.

At first, five of Zynga's main titles will be available before that number grows. They include CastleVille, Words With Friends, CityVille, Hidden Chronicles and Zynga Poker.
Zynga.com will launch later in March, in 16 languages.

Zynga starting up its own platform is a good idea for the company, as it makes up 12 percent of the $3.7 billion in revenue for Facebook and is still heavily dependent on the outside company for business. Altogether, Zynga has nearly 240 million monthly active users. It aims to move into more of a gaming and platform company rather than a provider for other, larger entities such as Facebook, and it already has apps for Android and iOS.
