Windows 8 Consumer Preview hits 1m downloads in one day

Windows 8 preview hits symbolic milestone

Microsoft quietly posted word Thursday afternoon that the Windows 8 Consumer Preview had hit one million downloads in a day. The figure is rare for a beta and roughly matches Apple's first-day Lion downloads. Microsoft didn't say how many were unique users.

The preview is helped primarily by the sharp break in design for the first time in almost two decades. Its Metro interface is the first Microsoft desktop interface genuinely optimized for touch and is a gamble that an entire interface borrowed and expanded from phones can work on conventional PCs. A traditional desktop exists, but only for x86-based PCs and mostly to support traditional apps when the new interface isn't an option.

Preview downloads won't necessarily translate to actual adoption. Traditionally, nearly all Windows upgrades have come through new PCs, not after-the-fact software sales. Many of the one million are also early adopters and niche users more likely to have systems that would work well for Windows 8, including tablets. Microsoft has promised that Windows 8 will run quickly, but few have touchscreens or are otherwise tuned to what the new OS will have.

The interface is ugly, garish, and unintuitive. The average user will not be able to figure out how to get back to the Start screen or how to shut down the computer.

MS gave employees the day off and offered a reward to the one who could download the new OS the most times.

I downloaded the preview yesterday, and I am very glad to see after 17 years Microsoft has decided to do something different. I feel this is good for the industry. However, I feel this is only a transitional release and by the time Windows 9 comes out almost all of the original desktop will be gone for normal users(I'm sure power users will always be able to enable it). I personally prefer OSX and always have, but I'm glad there will be competition. Plus, I will have a modern desktop to use at work since we only have PC's which sucks.

Downloaded and tried it. What an abomination! There is nothing about it that makes getting your work done easier. Different, yes. Better? not even close.

And this is the main fear of the 'pro' OS X crowd, as Apple seems to be moving towards more "simplistic" computing on the Mac platform.

I downloaded the beta/developers copy about a month ago and installed it under Parallels and it worked ok but was not impressed. I aagree it seemes to be not inuitive as far as moving bewtween sections and all of the tiles showing programs didn't work as the programs weren't installed.

    For real pro work...

Windows platform still wins hands down. There backwards compatibility is second to none.

For mindless internet and facebooking, Mac wins hands down.

It wasn't broke! Why are they changing it

Flipping through screen after screen is not helping to get things done quicker. Accessing programs like we did up through Windows 7 worked wonderfully. I hate having to flip through screens to find my programs. It's a FAIL as well as Apple's Launch Pad idea.

Enough to look new and easy, but not reality intuitive and will still need an army of Windows Certified IT Clowns to help users. Second Windows loving CIO will have jobs to mange the IT Clowns. This is awesome!
