Reference hardware brought to MWC

Texas Instruments has brought its OMAP5 reference hardware to Mobile World Congress, stepping up the competition with other chip makers. After stopping by Qualcomm's booth to check out their quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro hardware, we strolled over to TI's booth to see how the S4 Pro it stacks up against OMAP5 technology.

The OMAP5430 processor integrates two ARM Cortex-A15 cores, along with two ARM Cortex-M4 cores that help out with multimedia tasks such as video decoding. The SoC also brings a dual-core PowerVR SGX544 GPUs, which are claimed to bring improvements to power efficiency.

TI takes pride in the OMAP5's image processing technology, which is capable of capturing 16-megapixel stills in 0.5-second increments, and only slows down to 30 frames per second when jumping up to 24-megapixel images. Users can even take 12-megapixel stills while shooting 1080p video at 60fps simultaneously.

We were impressed by the apparent speed of the OMAP5 processor that powered TI's reference hardware, which was connected to an HDTV without slowing down the frame rate. The company is using a unique graphical user interface, however we would have liked to see how the chip handles Android 4.0.
