Android 5.0 coming as early as this fall?

The next major revision of Android, 5.0 or Jellybean, may begin arriving on devices as early as this fall. This indication came from VP of engineering for mobile at Google, Hiroshi Lockheimer, during an interview with Computerworld. He said that while the Google team behind Android is still working on the timing and the next OS, though the usual pace is a major release of the OS every year.

Lockheimer acknowledged fall is a good target, since Android 4.0 launched in November of 2011.

"Having said that, we're flexible. The is not what drives us, but what does is innovation and offering users a great experience," Lockheimer said.

While the Jellybean code name isn't confirmed either, but it does follow the alphabetical order of previous Android versions. Android 1.5 was dubbed Cupcake, 2.0 Donut, 2.1 Eclair, 2.2 Froyo, 2.3 Gingerbread, 3.0 Honeycomb, and 4.0 is called Ice Cream Sandwich. Google does have machines full of Jellybeans at the currently ongoing MWC, however, which is another hint.

As for Android 5.0, Lockheimer would only say the ongoing theme at Google is a focus on simplicity and power, at the same time. This is so both beginners and advanced users can use Android devices and be satisfied with them. A more "polished experience" that's faster and smoother is the goal, he added.
