Hands on: ZTE Era smartphone with quad-core Tegra 3 chip

ZTE approaches high-end market

ZTE introduced a myriad of new cellphones today at Mobile World Congress, but the Era smartphone held top honors. The Era is one of several Tegra 3-based Android phones that have been brought to Barcelona this week, competing among a crowd of high-end devices all packing quad-core processors. In our hands-on preview, we take a look at how the Era stacks up against the others.

Unfortunately the Era on the show floor was dead by the time we got to it, likely due to a drained battery. We expect the performance to be as fast as the other Tegra 3 phones from various other manufacturers, which have left us impressed.

The Era brings a 960x540 display, falling below the 1280x720 displays that HTC and Huawei are using for their quad-core flagships. We did like the think build of ZTE's model, however, which measured just 7.8mm. The design resembles many HTC handsets, with metal covering most of the back with plastic closer to the top and bottom edge.

The Era will arrive in Europe and China in the second half of the year. Like most phones unveiled over the past few days, the device was not paired with a price tag.
