Skype releases Windows Phone beta of Skype app

updated 05:35 am EST, Mon February 27, 2012

Skype announces beta version for Windows Phone

As one of the new divisions in Microsoft's empire, Skype has been working overtime to finally deliver a mobile app for Redmond's Windows Phone OS. Following an employees-only pre-release, Skype has announced that a free beta version of the app is now available in the Marketplace.

To mark the occasion, Skype has released a video highlighting some of the key features of the app, as well as giving a preview of how it has redesigned the app around Microsoft's Metro-theme. The app will run on most Windows Phone devices running Windows Phone 7.5 (Mango). Although in beta, users will still be able to make free audio and video calls over Wi-Fi or 3G to other Skype users, as well as standard calls.

Microsoft has said that the app will work best on the Nokia Lumia 710 and 800, HTC TITAN, HTC Radar, Samsung Focus S, and Samsung Focus Flash. A final release following bug fixes will become available in April.
