Hands on: ZTE Mimosa X with Ice Cream Sandwich

updated 04:25 pm EST, Mon February 27, 2012

Phone aims to please in midrange market

ZTE is one of several companies that attempted to satisfy the demand for low-, mid- and high-end smartphones with its Mobile World Congress unveilings. The Mimosa X is aimed at the midrange market, pairing a dual-core processor with Android 4.0. Electronista tried out the new device after ZTE's press event.

While NVIDIA's quad-core Tegra 3 chipset proved overwhelmingly popular for the latest high-end Android phones introduced this week, the Mimosa utilizes a dual-core Tegra 2 processor. The hardware is still extremely fast, though we could not test the browser due to the lack of an Internet connection.

The Mimosa's shape resembles many other Android handsets, such as the Galaxy Nexus, while fitting into the 4.3-inch category with a 960x540 display. Although the company is trying to reestablish its brand identity to avoid the association with poor quality, the back panel on the Mimosa still feels cheap.

Despite our reservations about the perceived quality, the Mimosa is not a terrible handset. It is also one of the few to offer an LTE radio with Tegra hardware.

ZTE has yet to formally confirm pricing details or a launch date.
