Google touts over 450K apps, 800 Android devices

Google's fun-filled booth at Mobile World Congress means to celebrate the more than tripling of the available apps in the Android Market since last year, currently at more than 450,000. In comparison, Apple's iOS mobile platform offers more than 500,000 applications. Google goes on to say there are more than one billion apps downloaded by Android users every month as well. More than 800 unique devices run on Android, and the software giant brought more than 100 to display at the show.

The booth otherwise houses app pods that showcase some of the more advanced apps, such as Android Beam, which lets users exchange web links, videos, directions, and apps by touching two compatible Android devices together.

Another number Google threw out there is the 850,000 new Android device activations every day, which represents a year-on-year growth rate of more than 250 percent. Google believes there are more than 300 million devices officially running on its OS globally.

There is also a slide in the booth to make visitors feel like kids again and the Android ADK-powered Bling Bot would create designs on the backplates of their Galaxy Nexus handsets.

    More important

    The number of quality apps is far more important. I know the App Store suffers from a lot of c*** apps, and I'm sure Android mall or whatever-you-call-it suffers just the same. If it is possible at all to determine, it'd be more interesting to see who has more truly incredible apps.

    I was pleasantly surprised...

    Pretty much every app I use on iOS I was able to find in the Android market (I don't have an Android phone, I was just interested in seeing for myself rather than relying on MacNN's terrible, error-riddled writing). Same apps, same in-app interfaces, with a few things that appeared to be specific to the different operating systems.

    And that, really, is the true benefit to consumers: We may not agree on each other's choices for phone operating systems, but it's a healthy marketplace when developers target everyone equally. After all, those of us who were Mac users in the "dark days" of the late 90s surely appreciated the companies that continued to develop for our operating system even though most of the money (at the time) was in Windows.

    Confused…

    Being an "open" operating system with a legion of relentless developers, I thought that Android was supposed to surpass iOS in sheer application numbers within six month after the release of the first Android phone. Now I hear that Android is just now "nearing" iOS app numbers? Bad reporting or just that Android hype is just that, hype.

    @andrewbw

    Android apps are NOT similar to iOS apps. Here's an example:

    Wow, you're right! You've found an example showing the opposite of what he said. Therefore he must be completely wrong, and iOS apps are so much superior to each and every app on the android market.
