Last-minute: Huawei intros Ascend D Quad as world's fastest

updated 08:25 am EST, Sun February 26, 2012

Huawei Ascend D Quad already confirmed

(Update: official details) Huawei's marketing coordination inadvertently spoiled its Mobile World Congress plans early on Sunday after the scrolling ads at Barcelona Airport started showing one of its products with Arnoud Wokke there to capture a photo. Now referred to as the Ascend D Quad, the former D1 Q is billed as the "world's fastest smartphone." The claim is likely a reference to the quad-core NVIDIA Tegra 3, although whether it's actually faster than some dual-core phones is up for debate.

Few other clues exist, although the three-button navigation implies Android 4.0, much like on the Ascend P1 S we tried in January.

The hardware should be made public in just over an hour at the official event, where Huawei may give a clue as to how soon the Ascend D Quad arrives along with filling in more details. A MediaPad 10 tablet is expected around the same time.

Update: Huawei has made it official. The phone centers on a quad-core chip that runs up to 1.5GHz along with a 4.5-inch, 720p display. It remains thin at 8.9mm deep and reportedly lasts long, at up to one to two whole days on a 1,800mAh battery; a Quad XL variant can last for two to three days on its 2,500mAh pack, albeit at the expense of a thicker 10.9mm body. Either has an eight-megapixel rear camera and a 1.3-megapixel front camera.

One dual-core variant, called just the D1, should be similar to the D Quad other than its using a dual-core 1.5GHz processor. The Quad models ship worldwide during the spring, including to North America, while the D1 has been narrowed down to April.
