ASUS Eee Pad Transformer gets Android 4.0 in US on Friday

updated 05:15 pm EST, Thu February 23, 2012

Update to be distributed tomorrow

ASUS will be releasing Android 4.0 for its original Eee Pad Transformer tablet owners in the US tomorrow. The company has posted on Twitter to let customers know it is coming. Taiwanese customers received access to the update earlier today.

The 4.0 update should mostly improve the speed in certain areas as well as add the interface elements that are now common across phones.

ASUS began shipping the Eee Pad Transformer to the US last April. It centers on a 10-inch. 1280x800 screen, an NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor, dual cameras, and 16GB of storage. It also could be docked with a full keyboard. Priced at $399, and being one of the first tablets to run Android 3.0, it was in relatively great demand as soon as it became available.

The original Transformer was rapidly superseded by the Transformer Prime in November. This tablet shipped initially with Android 3.0 with promises that it would soon be upgradable to Android 4.0. ASUS made good on its promise and began shipping an upgrade to Android 4.0 in early January.

This left owners of the original Transformer wondering when they might see ICS as well. ASUS advised them in mid-January that it was in the hands of Google for approval, but gave no indication when owners would see it until now.
