Mozilla renames BrowserID to Persona

updated 12:10 pm EST, Thu February 23, 2012

Mozilla BrowserID will be transitioned to Persona

Mozilla this week announced a change to its BrowserID online identity system. Initially just a rebrand, the service is now called Mozilla Persona, which Mozilla believes is better suited to user identity. To go with the name change, however, Mozilla does have feature and interface changes in development.

These include an identity dashboard, user data interconnect features, and more, though the company isn't revealing most details. The transition will take months for users to see, though the transition will be seamless, Mozilla promisee.

Developers will continue to use the BrowserID name for the protocol. That includes websites, e-mail providers, and browser implementers.

BrowserID and now Mozilla Persona allows users to log into multiple websites with just one name and password to save time, though websites need to support the service. Systems like Open ID already partly fill this role, although adoption hasn't been well quantified.
