Comcast sues Sprint over network patents

updated 05:55 pm EST, Wed February 22, 2012

Suit centers around four patents

Comcast has reportedly filed a lawsuit against Sprint in a Pennsylvania court, accusing the latter of violating several patents related to wireless network technology. The suit centers around four patents that were issued between 1999 and 2010, covering technology ranging from backhaul to USB modems and MMS/SMS messaging systems.

The lawsuit marks an escalation in the legal battle between both companies, which started in December when Sprint filed a separate lawsuit against Comcast and other competitors such as Time Warner, Cox and Cable One. The Sprint suit accused each of the defendants of infringing on a dozen patents related to VoIP technology.

Sprint has yet to respond to the latest filing, though it is viewed as a potential threat to the company's wireless voice and data services.

Comcast is asking the court for an injunction and monetary compensation. It remains unclear if either lawsuit will be settled out of court. [via Light Reading]
