Samsung goes for Awaken, Axiom, Heir, Rite phone trademarks

updated 07:05 pm EST, Wed February 22, 2012

No indication if/when phones will hit market

Samsung has submitted applications for trademarks for four mobile phones with the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). The company is trying to protect the names Awaken, Axiom, Heir and Rite. Filing for a trademark is a preemptive move, and is no guaranty that phones carrying any of those names will actually make it to the market.

The filing is vague and non-descriptive. It gives no indication of the phones' characteristics, or whether the names apply to various flavors of the same phone or four distinctly different devices.

In the past two years, Samsung has often put out its flagship Galaxy S models with different names on three or four major US carriers. While the new trademarks could be a sign of this, Samsung isn't required to trademark the names all at the same time or to use what it does get. [via Fusible]
