Sony begins rebranding mobile devices

Ericsson cobranding starts to be phased out

Last week, Sony took complete control of its former joint venture with Ericsson. Sony has already begun to phase out the Ericsson name from its mobile products branding. Its first step has been to redirect online viewers from the Sony Ericsson site to the company's SonyMobile web portal.

Sony acquired the 50 percent share of the joint venture it didn't own from Ericsson in October. The 1.05 billion ($1.47 billion) deal also gave Sony access to a broad intellectual property cross-licensing agreement and ownership of five "essential" patent families.

Sony plans to gradually migrate to the single-name branding over the next month. More changes are likely to appear at next week's Mobile World Congress show in Barcelona. [via Engadget]
