Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 benches show huge boost

updated 06:15 pm EST, Tue February 21, 2012

SoC outperforms chips in current smartphones

Qualcomm's next-generation S4 Snapdragon has been benchmarked. AnandTech, which which tracks the chipmaker, has received and tested the MSM8960 SoC (System on a Chip) and put it through a battery of performance tests. The results show that the new S4 offers significant performance improvements over Qualcomm's previous chipsets.

The MSM8960 pairs a dual-core 1.5GHz processor with an Adreno 225 graphics chip. The CPU is based on Qualcomm's Krait 28nm process chip architecture. The Adreno 225 is not Qualcomm's highest performance GPU, but it exploits the 28nm manufacturing process and run at up to 400MHz compared to 266MHz with earlier Adreno 2xx designs. The system-on-a-chip also incorporates 16GB of NAND memory and baseband radios for most cellular transmissions including GSM, CDMA, and LTE.

AnandTech found that the MDM8960 did significantly outperform both the chipsets available in smartphones on the market today and when compared with earlier generation Qualcomm hardware. It ran Android 4.0 faster than any other implementations that the site had tested. Subjectively, browsing was very "smooth." Quantitatively, in memory bandwidth and floating point math tests, it was almost twice as fast as current phones running a single thread, and almost three times as fast in dual thread tests. It doubled the speed of other chipsets in system and browser performance.

The new S4 parts should begin making their way into the market later this year. It's likely that a number of phones sporting the chipset could show up at MWC next week.
