SkyDrive to get Mac and Windows apps

Two leaks late in the weekend have uncovered significant plans on Microsoft's part to expand SkyDrive. Gemind contributor Felipe Zorzo in checking SkyDrive's pages saw currently inactive options to download desktop apps for the cloud service for both Mac and Windows users. The same tip also showed tiered pricing not unlike other cloud services, where users could expand the 25GB of free space by 20GB, 50GB, or 100GB for between $10 to $50 a year.

A follow-up discovery revealed to LiveSide that several more additions taking place. Members could soon share media directly to Twitter instead of through a link. The maximimum individual file limit would triple to 300MB, at least through the web, and Windows 8 users should soon have the option of storing the keys for their BitLocker drive encryption in SkyDrive instead of just physical drives.

More changes would allow for opening OpenDocument formats and a URL shortener.

It's not clear how soon the updates would come, although with screens showing a number of elements in place, an upgrade is likely. The expansion would be competition not just with directly comparable services like Dropbox or but also iCloud, which is now a staple element of Apple's OS X.

    Dropbox usage

I use Dropbox because it is connected to all of my iApps, which allows me to sync the data between my iPhone and iPad (and my Macs).

This will soon be deprecated by iCloud, but it isn't quite there yet. Microsoft's SkyDrive will have no place on my Apple devices.
