First MediaTek-based Android phones shadow HTC, LG

Phones may destined for Chinese market and more

Last week, Chinese chip-maker MediaTek launched a new mobile chipset that melded a 1GHz Cortex-A9 processor and a PowerVR SGX5 GPU. The MT6575 has the potential to be used for entry-level smartphones running Android 4.0. Although not quite at that performance level, the chip has shown up in three handsets destined for the Chinese market.

Images of the three phones at a recent photo shoot were posted by the Chinese blog MobileUncle. In appearance, they bear close resemblance to two HTC phones, most closely matching the Sensation, as well as LG phones like the Optimus 2X or Optimus 3D. They all sport 540x960 displays. One is reported to incorporate an autostereoscopic 3D touchscreen with dual SIM card slots and run Android 2.3.5 (Gingerbread). The phones are expected to hit the Chinese market in one to two months.

The launch is a muted start for MediaTek's chips, which were intended to lower the cost of mainstream phones and not necessarily to lead to knockoff designs. [via Unwired View]
