LG unveils Tag+ ahead of WMC, pushes NFC

LG has unveiled its Tag+ with NFC ahead of the World Mobile Congress. Very similar in concept to the Sony Xperia SmartTags revealed at CES 2012, LG's Tag+ allows users to take advantage of the NFC technology in its new Optimus LTE Tag to automatically set the phone into user-preset modes. In the example seen in the photo embedded below, LG demonstrates how the NFC-equipped version of the Optimus LTE smartphone can be toggled into car mode, just by placing the phone near the tag for the setting to be applied.

The Tag+ can be stuck onto various surfaces including on bedside table, on the desk at an office, or in the kitchen at home and set into certain modes. After being put into night mode by being swiped when going to sleep could automatically switch off radio reception, for example. In the morning a user could then swipe their phone across the tag in the kitchen to automatically turn on Wi-Fi and launch a weather app and RSS feed. When in the office, the phone could be swiped across the tag and launch any business-specific apps and work e-mail. The Tag+ are user programmable and apparently spill resistant too.

The new Optimus Tag smartphone is powered by a 1.2GHz dual-core Snapdragon processor and centers on a 4.3-inch IPS LCD (800x840) display. It incorporates a 5-megapixel camera on the rear with LED flash and a front-facing 1.3-megapixel camera. Onboard storage is 16GB while it will ship with Android 2.3 (Gingerbread).

Expect to see more of the Optimus Tag and the Tag+ at LG's exhibition and announcements during the World Mobile Congress in Barcelona, which kicks off next week.
