Google antenna farm plans hint at Google Fiber TV

Google petitions for antenna farm in Iowa

Google is attempting to build a farm of 4.5-meter tall satellite dishes near its data center in Council Bluffs, Iowa. In an FCC Public Notice (PDF), Google stated the antennas would receive broadcasts from satellites such as the Intelsat 9 that may be bundled with a high-speed fiber Internet service like its Google Fiber project. The satellites would only receive C-band and Ku-band signals.

The satellite installation would provide analog and digital audio, data and video services. Google bought 1,000 acres of land close to its Council Bluffs data center in late 2007. The data center is only a few hundred miles away from Kansas City, which should be getting 1Gbps Google Fiber Internet sometime this year. The content received from these planned satellites could be bundled with the service once it rolls out, either supplementing or replacing traditional cable TV subscriptions.
