Samsung makes Galaxy Ace 2, Galaxy mini 2 official

Galaxy Ace 2 and Galaxy mini 2 tackle budget world

Samsung late Monday swung out a pair of smartphones to upgrade its mid-range and entry-level Android packs. Leading the group, the Galaxy Ace 2 is comparatively advanced with a 3.8-inch, 480x800 display, a dual-core 800MHz processor, and 14.4Mbps 3G. It carries a five-megapixel autofocusing camera at the back and a VGA camera at the front, with 4GB of space and a microSDHC slot to store everything.

A new 1,500mAh battery is relatively large, Samsung said, although it wouldn't give an estimate for the phone's runtime. Some versions of the Ace 2 will have NFC, although it's "optional" rather than consistent.

The Galaxy mini 2 seen earlier is intended more as the starter model and has a colorful, likely hot-swappable back cover. The mini 2 also goes with a relatively large 1,300mAh battery.

Inside, the new mini is still conservative with a 3.3-inch 320x480 display, a single-core 800MHz processor, and 7.2Mbps 3G. A three-megapixel, fixed-focus camera is at the back and doesn't come with a matching front camera. Samsung has, however, included the same 4GB of storage plus microSDHC slot as the larger phone.

Both are still using Android 2.3 with TouchWiz 4 on top. The Galaxy mini 2 is the more internationally focused of the two with a planned introduction in France for March followed by a world rollout. So far, the Ace 2 has only been committed to a UK launch in April, although the original Ace went as far as Canada and could see a repeat.
