Samsung-contracted iPad 3 displays purportedly spotted

updated 04:30 pm EST, Sun February 19, 2012

Samsung may use Chinese firm to make iPad 3 LCDs

An atypical leak on Sunday saw the the manufacturing roots of the reported iPad 3's display more than the displays themselves. With the 2048x1536 resolution already identified, a forum contribution showed what's claimed to be shots from contractor Radiant Opto-Electronics' plant as it shipped a batch of the new screens. Although located in Wujiang, near Shanghai, the displays are labeled and boxed as Samsung displays that are reportedly shipped to Samsung in Korea before they reach Apple.

Security is supposedly tight and didn't allow careful photography, the unnamed sources said. They still managed to get multiple photos that included the production QR codes.

The images are notable in supporting beliefs that, while the iPad 3 display may have been designed by Sharp, it was still being outsourced to Korean companies to cope with the volumes Apple typically needs. Samsung and LG are known to themselves rely on outside suppliers, although they have domestic production and usually try to create an image of most of their factory output being local.

The original iPad and iPad 2 displays were originally designed by LG but manufactured by both LG, Samsung, and at least temporarily by Chimei Innolux. [via 9to5]

    Dear Leakers

Get yourselves an iPhone 4S. The 8MP camera is the bomb.

One positive note on Samsung & LG

"although they have domestic production and usually try to create an image of most of their factory output being local"

Apple does not even have local production anymore.

    Honestly does the media ever

spend it's time tracking component parts for any other company except Apple. It must be their desire to always be the first to unveil some Apple secrets or something.

You have to admit, the media knows Apple is the only place they'll find innovation and exciting new products.
