Nikon France tentatively dates D4, D800 releases

DSLRs to hit dealers' shelves in March and April

Nikon's French subsidiary may have confirmed shipping dates for its newest DSLRs. The camera maker will begin shipping the flagship D4 to at least France on March 15, it said. The basic D800 will begin shipping March 22, while its sibling, the D800E will hit shelves April 12.

The D4 incorporates a full-frame 16.2-megapixel sensor. It sports a 51-point auto-focusing system and a high sensitivity peak of ISO 204,800. Images are stored on either CompactFlash or the new XQD card. Video recording is the familiar 1080p at 30FPS, but includes better compression and control.

Nikon unveiled the D800 last week. Like the D4, it also features a full-frame CMOS sensor, but with a much sharper 36.3-megapixel density. It incorporates the same auto-focusing system and video recording capabilities, but its ISO maximum is a more subdued 25,600. Images are stored on either CompactFlash or SD cards. The D800E trades off improved sharpness by eliminating the traditional low-pass filter at the expense of possible moiré artifacts.

The D4 carries an official price tag of $6,000 for the body only. The D800 is expected to have an expected price of $3,000, while the D800E will be priced at $3,300. [via Nikon Rumors]
