Europeans to finally get 4G wireless in 2013

European smartphone users can expect to have access to 4G wireless networks sometime in 2013. The European Parliament has approved the commencement of a 4G roll-out utilizing the 800MHz band that is currently used by certain broadcasters still using analogue prior to the finalization of a digital switchover due at the end of 2012. The 800MHz band has been identified as one of the more effective frequencies for 4G networks as it can send data over longer distances and offers better in door reception.

'By this decision on radio spectrum policy we are taking the necessary steps in order to regain a European global leadership regarding mobile telecoms,' reads a statement issued by the European Parliament. 'With all the opportunities for European telecoms industry as well as for new services, new jobs and new growth.'

Member states of the EU will be responsible for managing their 4G network rollouts over the common 800MHz spectrum, which will go a long way to ensuring that efforts are standardized leading to a much better outcome for EU citizens traveling between countries.

The Radio Spectrum Policy Program (RSPP) also includes provisions to free up additional spectrum for mobile TV, transport systems, health, research, and energy grids using smart metering systems. European Commission Vice President Neelie Kroes hailed the development as helping to 'reduce the digital divide, [making] Europe a connected and competitive continent and introduce more wireless broadband choices.'
