Windows Phone Tango screens show MMS, memory tweaks

updated 01:25 pm EST, Wed February 15, 2012

Windows Phone Tango may bar some apps

A pair of discoveries from Russia's WP7Forum have potentially given much more insight into the differences for the Windows Phone Tango update. Every user will now have the option of attaching more than one picture or other media clip to an MMS, addressing one of the more common complaints. Also, those coming from a basic phone or switching Windows Phones will now have the option of exporting contacts to the SIM card's memory, not just importing them.

Tango's lowered memory footprint was there, but would come at a cost, they checked. Some apps purportedly won't run, while others may have to turn off automatic updates to their live tiles on the home screen. Podcasts wouldn't be remotely controlled from the device, photos wouldn't automatically go to SkyDrive for cloud storage, and live video streams would have to use H.264 and keep under a bitrate of 4Mbps to fit in memory.

Additional changes would bring refined options for whether roaming was allowed domestically or internationally as well as the expected wider language support. The number of preloaded apps possible could swell from 16 to 40.

Tango could be unveiled as soon as Mobile World Congress at the end of the month, although it's unlikely to go live at the same time. It might be attaced to the release of the rumored Nokia Lumia 610 and should otherwise be instrumental to getting truly low-cost Windows Phones for China and other developing countries.
