Nikon plans at least one more DSLR for 2012

Nikon's GM of marketing hints at one more DSLR

Nikon will reveal more DSLRs in 2012, the company's general manager for marketing, Nobuaki Sasagaki, revealed in an interview with Amateur Photographer. Thus far, the company revealed the D800 and the D4, but Sasagaki said these won't be the only two. He gave no details regarding any of the upcoming cameras.

The executive did give a clue that the one or more cameras would have a special highlight. Each camera Nikon makes, Sasagaki mentioned, needs to have an obvious technological benefit. The D800 offers high resolution through its 36.3-megapixel sensor, while the D4 has noise control thanks to its ultra-high ISO range.

He also claimed the D800 won't replace the D700 and its production won't cease, at least as long as there is demand for the D700. Whether or not this accurate isn't clear, as the company has a tendency of promising support for an older camera that only amounts to several months more as stock clears out.

An expansion and further development of the 1 Series range is due, however, and one of them could include a flagship-oriented mirrorless camera or a simpler one akin to the film-based FM3a.
