HTC said readying Beats-tinged streaming music service

updated 07:50 am EST, Wed February 15, 2012

HTC may have streaming music and Bluetooth boombox

HTC could get into its own proper music service and more if sources are accurate. Beats co-creator and Interscope-Geffen-A&M chairman Jimmy Iovine was said by GigaOM's contacts to be working with HTC on a streaming music service that would be built-in with each phone and tablet. Details of how it would behave weren't yet ready, but it was being crafted as an anti-Spotify service to avoid giving the incumbent too much of an "iTunes-like" edge.

Talks had supposedly been held with Spotify, but with no progress. Even with no readily available details, the platform could be made public at Mobile World Congress late this month, although it wouldn't necessarily be active then.

A Bluetooth-equipped boombox is also in development that would drop Monster now that it's no longer in a partnership with Beats. Little was mentioned other than the implication that it might be akin to a Jawbone Jambox.

HTC's actual core launches at MWC should include a tablet, most likely the Quattro quad-core device, as well as its usual phones. Known projects so far include the Endeavor quad-core phone and the more conventional Ville.
