Siri reveals Japanese language support

updated 08:05 pm EST, Tue February 14, 2012

Siri adds first non-European language

Apple through indirect means confirmed a longstanding expectation of Japanese language support in Siri. While direct proof of conversation wasn't mentioned, 9to5 in a quick check found that Siri now included Japanese along with the existing English, French, and German. The mention supported hints of extra language support coming by March.

The company hasn't formally acknowledged Siri in Japan as of yet. A visit to Apple Japan's page on Tuesday night Eastern time still showed no mention of the voice command system, which it only advertises when the service is live.

Expanding Siri support is considered important to boosting adoption for the iPhone 4S by advertising the most conspicuous new feature. Its nature as a cloud service is partly what dictates the speed of its growth, but it also lets Apple add the feature solely through a server-side update. Apple has taken to using this method for small or temporary features, such as when it enabled iTunes Live on the Apple TV only during a live Paul McCartney performance last week.
