HP outs source code for Isis browser

HP on Tuesday released its open-source Isis browser in the wake of its recently opened-up webOS platform. Meant for developers and dubbed Isis Project, the web browser engine is said to be fast and comply with current standards. It's based on the Enyo framework for webOS and uses both QtWebKit as well as JavaScriptCore.

The source code of the Isis Browser, QtWebKit, and Qt 4.8 are available to download now, but the team will continue to develop it. Nokia open-sourced QtWebKit, which will support Flash-based sites and elements.

The development team boasted that the browser is "extremely responsive" versus other browsers but stopped short of naming the challengers. Isis does "extensively" support HTML5 and CSS3.

At the same time, the Enyo framework has reached more than 40,000 downloads since its release nearly three weeks ago.

Isis can normally run on HP TouchPads with webOS 3.0.5.
