RIM extends free PlayBook offer, adds dev types

RIM has just revealed it will expand its free PlayBook promotion for Android developers by two weeks. What's more, it has expanded the offer to Native C/C++, HTML5, Adobe AIR, and Qt developers. The offer was due to end on Monday, but was extended due to the overwhelming interest, RIM said.

The company credits the promotion with 1,500 new app submissions from last Friday and more than 6,600 new developers registering to put apps in the BlackBerry App World store. RIM had to up the number of staff hours who are approving these large numbers of vendor registrations and app submissions.

New App World vendor registrations are now open until the end of day on February 15 and those who wish to claim the free PlayBook need to submit a new app by the end of March 2. The original program was meant to entice Android app developers to come and develop apps for the PlayBook and BlackBerry handsets in order to bump up the app volume.
