Mac version of iRise Studio prototyping software arrives

updated 09:30 pm EST, Mon February 13, 2012

Creates working models of mobile apps

Enterprise application developer iRise has brought its iRise Studio to the Mac, enabling rapid prototyping of mobile apps that can be tested on-screen early on in the development process rather than towards the end. The software helps team members see and actually interact with early versions of the proposed app before any actual coding has been done. With the use of a companion app, the prototype can be tested on a mobile device itself.

The program works like a desktop publishing program geared toward mobile interfaces, with a large library of app elements for iOS, Android, Blackberry, Windows Phone, WebOS and tablet development. Designers combine the elements to mock-up screens and can share the results with a viewer that simulates the target device and works on most platforms.

The companion mobile app, iRise Mobile (free), adds working text input and button links to create a working simulation of how the app will perform and enables testing on actual mobile devices. The testing and early visualization of how an app will look and function should save developers time and money over trying to describe goals and functionality on paper. The prototypes also allow for easy "focus group" testing to find flaws or get suggestions for improvements.

The program allows designers to create interactive visualizations without coding, and can utilize existing art assets from non-mobile applications to ensure a consistent look and feel. The program is available for immediate trial download but requires registration.

The cost of licensing and the system requirements of the Mac version has not yet been announced.
