Components aimed at entry-level smartphones

MediaTek has announced a new mobile chipset, the MT6575, that promises to bring Android 4.0 to entry-level smartphones. The hardware is based on a 1GHz Cortex-A9 processor, stepping up from the 650MHz chip of the previous-generation components that were utilized in Lenovo's A60 handset.

The new chipset is capable of supporting 720p playback and recording, using an eight-megapixel camera, while the PowerVR SGX graphics processor can be paired with 960x540 displays. The system is also said to support 3D display output and dual-SIM configurations.

MediaTek suggests the MT6575 chipset will be suitable for Android 4.0-based 3G/HSPA smartphones with retail prices in the sub-$200 range. The company has yet to announce specific details for companies that may use the new components in upcoming hardware.
