Grammys give Lifetime Achievement Award to Steve Jobs

Eddy Cue, Yo-Yo Ma tribute Jobs at Grammys

The Recording Academy in its annual pre-show ceremony gave Steve Jobs its promised Lifetime Achievement award. The posthumous award was accepted on behalf of Jobs and family by Apple Senior VP Eddy Cue. In the acceptance speech, Cue highlighted how music was a central part of Jobs' existence; he was an outspoken fan of The Beatles and Bob Dylan, and often made music a focus of Apple's work.

"Music shaped [Jobs'] life and made him who he was," the Academy quoted Cue as saying. "When he introduced the iPod in 2001, people asked, 'Why are you doing this?' He said, 'We love music and it's always good to do something you love.'"

Accompanying the award was a tribute from cellist Yo-Yo Ma. He recounted the wedding music request and follow-up that led to him and Jobs becoming friends to his conversations, including a recounting of Jobs' father Paul stressing the importance of perfecting even the part of a work no one sees. Ma played music at Jobs' funeral this October after the late CEO requested it earlier that year.

Other posthumous awards went to hybrid poet and singer Gil Scott-Heron as well as sound engineer Roger Nichols.

    Well deserved

Say whatever you like about Steve Jobs, it's an undeniable fact that he changed music -- not just the music industry, but music itself -- on a very fundamental level.
