updated 07:40 am EST, Fri February 10, 2012

Roku branches out to UK in earnest

Roku's international plans became real Friday after it began UK and Ireland. The Roku LT and Roku 2 XS are now available for 50 and 100 respectively (60 and 120 euros). British customers are simultaneously getting BBC iPlayer to catch up on the past one to two weeks of TV shows.

Either country gets many of the Internet content channels from the US version. Both get paid content from Netflix, MLB.tv, and UFC, as well as free content from Classical TV, TuneIn Radio, Fox News, and WSJ Live. Personal and local content varies from Angry Birds to social media in Facebook and Flickr. UK customers also have access to Sony's free movie and video service Crackle.

The British and Irish releases are the first for Roku outside of the US and aren't expected to be the last. Roku also promised a Canadian release for early 2012, and it should include most American content.
