FCC schedules reverse auction for rural 3G build out

FCC puts up $300 for Phase 1 of Mobility Fund

The FCC has scheduled a reverse auction to help facilitate a build out program to expand 3G services to rural regions. The agency has compiled a $300 million Mobility Fund for Phase 1 of the project as it aims to give US citizens 'universal broadband and advanced mobile coverage by the end of the decade.' The money has been made available as part of the Connect America Fund.

"As our new map demonstrates, millions of Americans still live, work, and travel in areas where advanced mobile networks have not been built out,' said FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski. 'Through the FCC's Connect America Fund, we're helping complete our nation's wired and wireless infrastructure, which will lead to job creation, economic growth, and innovation in the 21st century,' he added.

Phase 1 of the build-out will provide one-time support to close gaps in the nation's mobile wireless service. By offering the fund, the FCC will encourage private investment in building out areas of the mobile network where there is less commercial incentive for carriers to establish their own, fully funded network infrastructures. The auction is scheduled to begin on September 27.
